Consider the land you reside on
Blanket Exercise
The blanket exercise is an activity done with a small group of people that explains the history and relationship of Indigenous and Non Indigenous peoples. There are three roles in the activity, the settlers, the Indigenous peoples, and the narrator. Blankets are placed on the floor and they represent the land. Individuals acting as the Indigenous Peoples stand on the land and begin to interact with the settlers. As the story is told, the blankets and Indigenous Peoples begin to disappear symbolizing the land that was taken from the Indigenous Peoples. The activity gives people the opportunity to understand a very small fraction of what the Indigenous Peoples went through. We will never truly understand the pain the Indigenous Peoples went through but it is important for everyone to empathize and recognize the pain and suffering. At the end of the activity, it is important for everyone to sit in a circle and share their experience.
